Both Norton and MacAfee have on-access scans which will scan files as you open them to make sure they don't have viruses. A lot of people don't like this because it is very resource intense to constantly be scanning files for viruses and will significantly impact performance on the system. Also, these tools are not free. But remember, you generally get what you pay for. You could use some free antivirus software you find on the internet somewhere, but it may not provide the quality or ease of use as some of the non-free vendors. Think about it....

all antivirus programs do that. Here is a list of free ones
Yes. Download CyberDefender 2.0 for free. It is wonderful.

Hi Dear,

Your search will end if U install NORTRAN Antivirus. which runs automatically whenever any virus found or try to enter in Ur computer. This comes with Intel motherboard installer.

another free antivirus is AVG, which is free of cost for downloading.
Try AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition; from what I recall it pulls up alerts if anything is detected entering your system.

Alternatively you can set it to scan your computer automatically at time intervals decide by you.
