i would return it if you bought it recently. if its for a an older version then you'll need to buy the latest copy and install it.
say you bought a copy of 2003 anti virus app yesterday, it would only be good for a year. so if it wont register take it back to the store someone has already used its key.
Honestly, if you bought norton, return it.
It has a habit of slowing down computers, only scanning a limited part of your computer (avoiding the sensitive areas), putting out their updates late, thinking windows system files are viruses, ect.
Search for yourself.
I use Avira, since it is free, does everything that Norton does, and everything that Norton DOSN'T.
