My new laptop is great, but it gets a little slow. The ''norton'' software came with the laptop. I tried uninstalling it, but it didn't come off. I need something free that works great.

I've been using the free version of Avast! for the last 5 years and it has never let a virus through yet! It is stable and doesn't consume system resources as heavily as some of the well known paid-for AV programs.

It's always good to use a second AV program, such as AVG, and a couple of anti-spyware applications as well. This gives you more comprehensive protection.

Most likely windows is not reconising as an anti-virus, and just another program.
You probably updated windows, the older versions of xp didn't check for an antivirus, it can be turned off if it really annoys you, it doesn't mean that AVG isn't working any more though.
Chech that you have not accidentaly deleted any important files of AVG.Check in Control Panel-%26gt;Add or Remove Programs-%26gt;AVG. If its there and still Windows shows the message then some files may have got deleted.Reinstall the app.
If you can see AVG in the bottom right corner,click to make sure its running,if not you may have to install it again( first unistall) !

one way is to use a usb memory stick and dnlaod the anti-virus file onto that, then put the stick into the windows usb port and install from the stick.

Both Norton and MacAfee have on-access scans which will scan files as you open them to make sure they don't have viruses. A lot of people don't like this because it is very resource intense to constantly be scanning files for viruses and will significantly impact performance on the system. Also, these tools are not free. But remember, you generally get what you pay for. You could use some free antivirus software you find on the internet somewhere, but it may not provide the quality or ease of use as some of the non-free vendors. Think about it....

For Anti-Virus I would reccomend Avira Antivir, Avast, or AVG free.

Having two or more antivirus running may well slow down your system if both do real time scanning. Perhaps you can turn off autoscanning for AVG - use it (and any other antivirus/antispyware software) for on demand scan (meaning as and when you need it)
you cannot have more than one AV, I'm surprised your computer isn't locking up
having 2 antivirus programs running is not a good idea, they will try to block each other and slow the PC down. The best way to remove Norton if you want to stay with AVG is to load F-secure internet security trial version. It will completely remove Norton, the uninstall will not. F-secure can then be uninstalled after the trial or anytime you wish. Then reload AVG or Avast to stick with free antivirus.

I found them on my own but later found the University Of Harvard Computer Science Division also recommends them. They are all free.

I have used them and Windows XP with SP2 and keep it updated.

I also use Internet Explorer for the browser with MSN toolbar with popups blocked.

Sense SP2 (Service Pack 2) came out I have not had 1 Single problem with any of my computers running all the programs listed and practicing safe computing. (knock on Wood) I can't guarantee the same results for you but that's what I use.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. I believe having more than 1 AV will only make them crash and come up with errors you dont have, or they will find each other as viruses.

I use ad-aware and spybot search %26 destroy for anti-spyware software and then Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 12 for anti-virus %26 firewall and so far i've had my laptop for 4 months and it's been running great. The worst thing happens when we accept a message from a stranger. However if you have a warranty give it to the phone provider for check up, but as the first one said. Reset your phone. if you don't know how to do it there should be a button for reseting or an option saying restore factory setup.

It also happened to my cousin's cellphone. He keeps on receiving MMS and Blue-tooth attempting to connect with his phone. He also receives complaints from his friends who are in his phone book (including me) that he keeps on sending texts and MMS messages. The phone company advise him to go to a Nokia service center or whatever brand your cel is and reformat the cellphone software. It actually worked and they advised that always check your blue-tooth connection if it is disabled after using it because it is the main cause of cellphone virus infections. I hope this helps.

I would not recommend upgrading to Vista. We may all have to one day, but for now, stick with XP.

My college offers a free professional version of Norton Antivirus and it didn't find any viruses on the Windows partition of my MacBook. I used Apple's Boot Camp 1.2b to install Windows and so far so good. I used ClamXav on my Mac OS X partition and it found five instances of ''AdWare.BHO-2''. Since the partition is NTFS, I can't do anything to the Windows partition from within OS X. What should I do to remove these supposed virus detections?

I recommend you stay away from the new version of AVG unless you have no firewall.The new version has a FW and it wreaks havoc. I used AVG for years and got rid of it this year because they packaged the software. You get what you pay for and AVG free works like a free software.

My computer is cutting out completely whenever I run CD-ROM's, DVD-ROM's or load flash, java etc. content on the internet (usually only happens when it takes up most of the screen). sounds like memory or processor is not up to speed. An upgrade might be needed. Stuff cutting out from the internet could actually be the speed of the internet and that is out of your hands. Or if it's just when cds are in the drive then it could be the drive too. If it was overheating then it wouldn't skip, it would just shut off...trust me, i've done it.

My machine came loaded with McAfee's trial version, and when it expired, I downloaded the free version of PC Tools antivirus. (mistake #1 ?)

Now I have learned I should have removed all McAfee files prior to setting up PC Tools.

I simply downloaded the new pgm. and it set itself up, and seemed OK.

Now I get pop up warnings that PC Tools version 3.1.0.17 is out of date, but when I try to update it, I get a message, ''DOWNLOAD FAILED, TRY AGAIN LATER''

I've browsed ''Y'' Answers for info, and find most people prefer AVG, and warn that removing McAfee is difficult, and same for PC Tools.

Here's what I THINK I should do:

1. Back up files I need.

2. Download AVG to a file or a disk?

3. Download Mc uninst. tool.

4. Find a PC Tools uninstall tool?

5. Offline, remove Mc and Pc Tools. and install AVG.

6. Pray.

(system restore not attractive, because PCT was added long time ago. Also, I don't have a windows install disk)

Well it's not the best idea to have more than one AV program running at once but to have them installed, but not active? I'm not sure. I have had to manually uninstall many MacAfee products in the past. I'm almost positive this is causing all of your problems. It's a pain, but they do give you step by step instructions on their website(just find your product and search for manually uninstall). Their auto uninstall stinks it leaves a ton of registry and shared files behind and will eventually corrupt your whole system, my advice once you get rid of it don't ever install another MacAfee product on your computer until they get their crap together.

hey! norton is pretty good. what did the online scan show? i doubt it's a virus. i'd blame spysweeper. and nav only removes viruses. you need a firewall to stop them and the attacks. consider norton internet security 2006.

edit: don't install why they suggested. get NIS06, get your windows updated and install something for the spyware. check out download.com and see what antispyware softwares are popular. or search for a top10. if you are infected with a virus, there's no use of backing up your data right now... you can only do it on the clean partitions.

It may not be virus just because NAV 2006 shows that it is. NAV 2006 scans files that resembles or have certain characteristics of a virus file. My mum has always had norton anti virus on her pc, however this expired a couple of weeks ago. She is reluctant to renew as she is getting a new laptop next month and will no longer use the desktop for internet browsing, so she downloaded a free trial of ESET NOD32 antivirus. Since she has done this the pc has stopped working! You can switch it on, and it is normal at first, but after a minute or 2 everything freezes and you can't do anything. I've obviously tried to remove the NOD32 but you don't get long enough before it freezes. When it does freeze, you can still move the mouse around but can do nothing else. Please help! I'm usually good with computer problems but this has got the better of me!

Try starting in safe mode (tap F8 as the computer is restarting) and then uninstall NOD. You really need to remove one security programme (AV and Firewalls) before installing another. The problem is caused because you are using two Anti vrus programs together. You need to down load the Norton Removal Tool - get it on your PC and transfer it to your Mum's computer. start her computer in Safe Mode (repeatedly click F8 at boot up), copy the tool to her desktop and then run it. follow it's instructions.

Never have 2 or more software firewalls running on the same computer as they will conflict with each other. Remember now with SP2 on WinXP there is a firewall, so when using a third party alternative be sure to disable the Windows SP2 firewall.

you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus. i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar.

you can try both combinations but i assure you avg and comodo is the best route.....norton is terrible and will drastically slow down even the best systems on the market. the only decent 'norton' product is the corporate antivirus client

If Avast can detect the trojan, it might be able to remove it in safe mode.

To boot into safe mode, turn off your PC, start it again and press F8 during the bootup screen. Then choose to boot into safe mode.

Once in safe mode, do a full system scan using Avast and hopefully it will be able to remove it.

If not, dump Avast and change antivirus' to Avira AntiVir PE Classic and give that a try. It is completely free and has VERY good detection rates. It also uses much less system resources than Avast.

You might need to download some anti-trojan/anti-spyware scanners too.

How do you have room to run any other programs? This might be a little on the paranoid side. I trust my Bitdefender 10 to do everything and it hasn't let me down yet. Maybe I am being naive - but when I had other stuff on there it slowed to a snail's pace..

Scan again with both your programs in safe mode and try and attempt removalagain.

In general, Windows does not allow the deletion of files when they are in use. However, Safe Mode will only load a minimum amount of drivers and services to run Windows, giving removal a better chance. Scan again and attempt to delete while your computer is in safe mode.

To access Safe Mode, reboot then repeatedly press the F8 key at the first screen. The screen will look strange, but don't panic. This is normal in Safe Mode.

When finished removing those pests, reboot again to return to normal mode.

You can change to safe mode which is for when you have a virus, and you can't get rid of it. If you have to you can reformat your computer.
I would suggest that you try to do a System Restore and see if that helps you.

I'm trying to protect my computer with the best (free) programs that I can. I have Norton that came with my computers' software bundle, but it's a resource hog and is huge.

I've been looking at these for AntiVirus:

AVG - I've tried it already, though a lot of people said it's not that great and doesn't pick up a lot of viruses very well).

Avast - I have tried this one as well...but just the same as with AVG, a lot of people said it wasn't all that great at picking up various viruses.

Trend Micro - I know they have been around for a very long time (I know of them by the years-old name ''PC-Cillin'' Antivirus).

Nod32 - Not sure if this one costs to buy it...haven't looked into it yet, but a lot of people seemed to like it in reviews that I have red. Never heard of it.

Bit Defender: Apparently this is a free version of some kind of antivirus/antispyware program by Microsoft. It seemed to get good reviews, though.

OK, my friend sent me a link in AIM that I should have tooken my first instinct on by not clicking on it, and it's been causing problems. I am running Windows 2000 SP4. The problems:

1. I have a ''Mirar Toolbar'' and a toolbar that just says ''Search'' installed on my computer. I have already tried to go in and remove the program, but it tells me I don't have the prilveliges to do it. I'm the only one who uses this computer.

2. It continues to pop up with different websites offering me stuff that I don't need. It's like whenever I type in any web address, something pops up and bothers me. I have already tried raising my cookie level and that doesn't seem to work.

Ping latency cannot be resolved on your end. Ask your internet provider if they offer something called ''Fastpath''. This will switch off the error correction feature of DSL lines and thus reduce your Ping latency a bit.

However, try to find a server in your vicinity. Two digit pings are normally only achievable with LAN connections. Not Internet connections.

So no matter what you do to your PC, it won't affect PING.

Maybe try to shut down the McAffee Firewall (but make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed, and the Windows XP firewall active. This is normally enough. The McAfee Firewall will only slow you down.

your system won't support 2007 you don't have enough memory. 2007 requires 256MB of Ram
Office 2007 is not compatible with windows 2000 pro. You have to use 2003 or lower.
If you are on a tight budget you could use OpenOffice which is free and compatible with Microsoft Office.

For the little RAM you have I would use Office 2000 (maybe even Office 97).

As for antivirus, the easiest FREE one is AVG. You can also try avast! Home edition which is also free.

I personally believe Kapersky to be the best antivirus out there.
